Is traveling to Thailand to have surgeries even safe? All I've seen of Thailand is poor mud holes and those "feed the children" commercials, how can my surgery in Thailand be any good?
Traveling anywhere, even to the corner grocery store is taking a risk on your life, if you think about it. Car accidents have happened while driving to the corner grocery store, in very short distances and have killed people.
Having said that, you should take responsible action when planning your trip and contact the American Embassy in Thailand if you are thinking of coming. Also, you should try to have a trusted family member or friend travel with you for emotional support, surgery recovery can be a challenge. If you cannot arrange this, then please contact us so that we can arrange to pick you up from the airport.
Safe traveling requires common sense. Don't bring unnecessary valuables, don't brag or flash money, and always use a safe in your patient room or hotel. Best to bring your own locks (combination), so that you can have total control over your valuables. If you are carrying electronics like laptop, cameras, ipods, cell phones, PDA's, etc with you, please make sure you have insurance on these items. The fees range anywhere from $10 to $50 for the duration of your stay. Yanhee does not insure electronics, but you can do a Google search to find one for you.
In addition, you can purchase a laptop lock at Best Buy or any other electronics store for a few dollars. Notify the American Embassy of your flight itiniary and give them your name and passport number , as well as the places you will be staying.
Yes, Thailand has a large poverty problem, but so does New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and any major metropolitan city in the US. It would be foolish to say that John Hopkin's or the Mayo Clinic are not good hospitals, just because there is a high poverty or crime rate in certain areas.
There is another side to Thailand that has shocked many Americans coming to visit for the first time. In 2007 alone, over 750,002 Americans went to Thailand for their medical needs. (not just plastic surgery)

American doctors are coming to Yanhee International Hospital to learn some of the most sophisticated and latest surgery technology on the planet.
It's one of the best kept secrets from Hollywood celebrities and movie stars to the wealthy, to American plastic surgeons, to the everyday person without proper health insurance coverage for their procedures.
In addition, we are actively seeking JCI accreditation, which means that once this is approved, we will be able to accept major American insurance companies at Yanhee International Hospital. (Think Blue Cross & Blue Shield for example)
Why should I go to Yanhee Hospital?
Yanhee is SE's Asia's largest plastic surgery hospital, with International ISO 9000 certification. That means, Yanhee not only meets Thailand's criteria for quality care, but also meets International world standards for quality care.
But more importantly, Yanhee strives to help patients, by keeping their costs reasonable, while at the same time providing world-class quality medical care. We know it's about people, that's why we have various programs such as accomodation packages, internet radio, freebies, trust funds, and more.
With this in mind, we can't tell you where you should go, this has to be a gut level conviction on your part as well as a health application evaluation on our part. Fill out this Health Questionnaire form here first, and let's see if we're a good match.
How do I validate Yanhee Hospital and the surgeon? How can I be sure this is safe?
Excellent question! Too many people are simply taking someone else's word on the quality of a surgeon or hospital. You owe it to yourself to investigate further and find out for yourself! Here's a check list;
First check with the regulatory agencies that control the quality of the doctor or hospital. In the US, each surgeon has to be in good standing with the medical board of his/her state of residence. International hospitals, like Yanhee, have to be in good standing with International standards, not just American standards.
You can compare each country's standards as having passed a high school diploma and ISO certification as University level standards. (This analogy is not 100% accurate, but hopefully you get the message)
Any quality overseas hospital or clinic should be ISO 9000 certified.
You can contact the Secretary of Committe of Consumer Policy (Mrs. Kissinger-Matray) click Here
For more information on ISO Certification click here.
Why is it so cheap? Haven't you ever heard of "you get what you pay for?"
Price alone should never be a deciding factor as to whether or not to choose a Hospital or surgeon. Yes, you do get what you pay for, and your US dollar gets you anywhere from 3 to 4 times as much in Thailand. In other words, because of the economy, your American dollars are worth a lot more in Thailand and can buy you a lot more.
The average per capita income for the average Thai person is about $9,000/ year. The average plastic surgery (rhinoplasty or mammoplasty) at Yanhee and costs anywhere from $2800 to $5000. So in order for a Thai person to have the procedure done, it would cost them approximately half a year's pay. (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/th.html)
So in reality, the fees for the surgeries are not cheap at all, according to Thailand's economy! Instead, the average US citizen has an advantage over the native Thais, because of having US dollars.
